    Canadians are lumberjacks.
Canada is a giant piece of white chocolate sitting on top of America. (Canada is covered in ice).
Canadians are nice people - they are well mannered and polite.
    Canadians apologize a lot.

    2:
I learned that there was a maple syrup heist, where 18.000.000 dollars worth of maple syrup was stolen. They replaced the syrup in the big cans with water.
The Canada Arm. Canadians make bad TV.
The cold makes you crazy - you get crazy thoughts. In Sweden and Norway the deal with the cold by making death metal, Canada makes comedy.

    3:
The director of the movie "Being Canadian" said himself, that he made a home movie about his home to show people what Canada really is. He needs to prove something.
He has the Canadian flag on the mini van he is driving. He Canadian flag is almost everywhere.
They describe the Canadian people as insecure and people with low self-esteem. The celebration of Canada Day in Vancouver is crazy. Public national enthusiasm.
They appreciate they are under the radar.
They describe Canada as being best place in the world to live.
    Today's Canada doesn't need other people's approval.

    4:
They constantly compare themselves to others (especially Americans).
They have been suffering under the shadow of their neighbor. Canadian sponge that sucks up the American paint and throw it back.
Canadians feel like they have a connection to other Canadians.
Canadians are proud to be Canadian and a part of the Canadian community. They are proud of their country.

  3. What does it mean to be Canadian?
    Something new?
First, I didn’t know that Canada Day was the 1st of July. That was the day they became independent - in 1867. I didn’t even know that they have a National Day.
What surprised me the most is that they burned down The White House and that they the so called “the Canadarm”. A robert arm that sits on a spaceship.
I also didn’t know, that about 80 % of all the syrup in the world comes from Canada - that’s crazy.
The last thing I didn’t know was, that the actors Ben Stiller and Seth Rogan were Canadians.

    Prejudices:
There are many prejudices about Canada - like a lot. One of the first things that Cohen mentions in the film, is that he was raised by a lumber jack - a typical Canadian man.
There are many prejudices when it comes to Canadians. When it comes to the land, the landscape, many people think, that it is very cold, that there is a lot of snow. One person said “Do you ever see the sun?”.
When it comes to the population, the prejudices are that they are very tall and look very clean, but the most common thing about Canadians is that they are very polite. They apologize a lot. They say sorry for everything, even the most unimportant things. Many people think that Canadians automatically are a nice person.
Then there is there history. Many people think that Canada doesn’t have a history, but they do. We just don’t learn about it in school and you never hear about it - I haven’t.
Then there is hockey. Many people think that Canada is obsessed with hockey. It is very big in Canada, but it is also the national sport, so fair enough.
And last, the most popular thing in Canada - maple syrup. They eat/drink a lot of maple syrup in Canada and about 80 % of all syrup in the world comes from Canada, like I said before.

    "Secret Smugness" versus insecurities
The Canadians feel, that they are so much better than the Americans, but at the same time they are also very shy. The feel they are a great people, but they don’t say it out lout.
They want the world to know who they are and how their country is like, but again, they don’t say it out lout.

    Canada- an imagined community?
The Canadians are very proud and happy to be Canadians. They are one community where they stand together. Many in world are making fun of them, but as long as they stand together as one Canadian people, they don’t care.

  4. 1: Which prejudices exist towards Canadians?

The Canadians have a great deal of prejudices against them. The world believes that all Canadians are lumberjacks who love hockey and are all tall, broad and hairy. They must live in igloos, since Canada is basically a frozen tundra 12 months of the year, but even so the Canadians are all nice snow people, who surprisingly do not melt in the sun. Since they cannot grow vegetables, and other crops, because of all the ice and snow, they survive on beer, maple syrup and general politeness.

2: Did you learn something new?

I learned that Canada officially became a country in 1867 on the first of July, which is officially known as Canada Day. I also learned that they made the little arm that sits on the side of space shuttles, and that they apparently has burned down the White House at some point in history. Furthermore I learned that the provide 80% of the maple syrup in the world, which is both ridiculous and amazing at the same time.

3: The author of the article "America is sexy" claimed that Canadians were both filled with insecurities and quietly smug about how great Canada is. Did you see examples of that in the movie?

Canadians have this inferiority complex, where they feel insecure, because people do not know much about Canada, but at the same time they also act superior to Americans, while pretending to be humble.

4: Did you see examples of the idea that Canada is an imagined community?

Canadians are united in the fact that they are Canadians, and they take pride in that and their country. They feel good and very proud, when pointing out famous Canadians to others, even though the only thing they have in common is their nationality.

  5. Being Canadian:

    Which prejudices exist towards CANADIANS?
There is today still many prejudices towards Canada. Some of them is the fact that some people thinks they live under a big rock of ice and therefor couldn't grow vegetables.
Another thing is there way of speaking and the way they pronouns the words.
    Living in an igloo
    Every Canadian knows everybody
Them being a part of America

    DID YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW?
I think I learn many new things. I had a great knowledge about Canada before we started but this movie gave be a bigger perspective on Canada. It gave me a chance to hear about Canada from people living there and feeling how it is without guessing. it gave a clearer sight on how close and proud a nation can be without being arrogant. Some other thing I didn't knew is how sweet and kind "some" Canadians is.

THE AUTHOR OF THE ARTICLE "AMERICA IS SEXY" CLAIMED THAT CANADIANS WERE BOTH FILLED WITH INSECURITIES AND QUIETLY SMUG ABOUT HOW GREAT CANADA IS. DID YOU SEE EXAMPLES OF THAT IN THE MOVIE?
I didn't really sense any Canadians with insecurities, everybody we heard from seemed very confident and happy. Everybody had something great to say about Canada and wasn't afraid of saying it. Sometimes I could sense a bit of smug not in an cynical way but in a proud way. The fact that they were so proud sometimes ruined it for them because it could come out in a bit arrogance way.

DID YOU SEE EXAMPLES OF THE IDEA THAT CANADA IS AN IMAGINED COMMUNITY?
In the beginning of the film there is an example of Canada as an imagined Community. He talks about the country as the greatest thing ever and describes his love for Canada but he actually starts his journey in a part of Canada were he hasn't been before which is an example of an Imagined community. An imagined community is something that exist in our heads.

  6. 1: Which prejudices exist towards Canadians?
Through the film a lot of prejudice was mentioned directly and indirectly. Some of them was that Canadians cannot grow vegetables because of all the ice covering the ground in Canada. Later their way speaking is made fun of.
In one of the interviews with non-Canadians they say that Canadian’s skin-color is red and white. It is also mentioned that the person being interviewed expects that Canadians lives in a clean society.

2: Did you learn something new?
It surprised me that Americans do not learn Canadian history, but the Canadians learn their own and American history. I also was not aware of that Canada ones burned down the White House. I have never heard of the French and English-issue in Québec.

3: The author of the article "America is sexy" claimed that Canadians were both filled with insecurities and quietly smug about how great Canada is. Did you see examples of that in the movie?
Yes, I did see some examples. For instance, if a mistake is made Canadians are afraid of making a big deal out of it. They would rather keep it for themselves than take action and say it out loud.

4: Did you see examples of the idea that Canada is an imagined community?
They love to point out other Canadians and they want to show that Canadians also have an impact on things. So every time they would meet a Canadian outside Canada, they would feel some sort of connection. Because they are from the same country.

    6) That Canadians are raised by lumberjacks.
    7) What people outside Canada thinks is Canadian food: beer, donuts, sushi in Vancouver, spaghetti and moose balls, snow cones and hotdogs and Canadian syrup.

    2:

The former president describes Canada as unknown.

People do not learn any history about Canada in school.

Curling is also a popular sport in Canada - it is actually combined with Canada, because it is cold and it is a polite sport.

Canada feel that they are America's little brother.

    Toronto is Canada's New York.

    Known for their politeness.

    Canadians apologises for everything.

Canadians are afraid to put people "down", to "hurt" people, because they are afraid of what people would say about them afterwards.

    3:

He holds the Canadian flag in his hand, and he has it with him almost everywhere he goes.

Canada is, according to them, the best country to live in.

They feel that they are better than the Americans, but they won't say it out loud.

  12. 1: Which prejudices exist towards Canadians?

People have a lot of predjudices towards Canadians, some true and some false. Some people from around the world thinks that Canada is covered with ice and that everyone lives in iglos with no tv or internet. Some of the other predjudices mentioned are that Canadians are tall, hairy and have big shoulders, that they are all lumberjacks, that Canada is a very clean country, that they are very polite, that they drink a lot of beer and eats only maple syrup.

2: Did you learn something new?

I didn't really know anything about Canada to begin with, other than that I had some predjudices, so a lot of things were new to me. For example I didn't know about Canada day, and a lot of the predjudices I had has been proven wrong, which means I have a better idea now of what it's like being a Canadian.

3: The author of the article "America is sexy" claimed that Canadians were both filled with insecurities and quietly smug about how great Canada is. Did you see examples of that in the movie?

On one hand I think that most Canadians are very proud of being Canadians and they love their country very much and find it very attractive. But on the other hand Canadians are also very insecure because they are always in the background, and they don't like to brag about anything. They are afraid to put someone else down, even though others do them wrong, or in this case - has a lot of predjudices against them. Furthermore Canadians like to pint out other Canadians because they seek recognition, which also shows us that they are insecure.

4: Did you see examples of the idea that Canada is an imagined community?

    - Canada has always been in the background and is always compared to others - Canadians compare themselves to Americans and instead of defining themselves as Canadians they define themselves as not being like the Americans.
    - Robert Cohen starts his journey in Canada in a place where he has never been before, but also says already from the beginning that he loves Canada very much.
