  1. 1. Review

The Truman Show is another movie with a perfect and flawless concept, but rugged and questionable execution. The selection of Jim Carrey as the main character was a subjective move, but he performed in a decent way. To gain more popularity, the writers should have thought of portraying Seahaven, the small town that the main character lives in, as a more realistic place. If you, as a viewer, feel like you can connect with the storyline, you're more likely to enjoy the movie, thinking: "Wow, this actually could (realistically) happen to me!" The exaggeration and boldness of the movie was overdone.

    2. Message

The message of the film is to remind people of the surveyed world we live in. Although things aren't as dramatic as they are with Truman (5,000 cameras in a small town), it's still food for thought.

    3. Relevance

It was relevant because we're talking about surveillance and invasion of privacy/protection against theft and violence. The Truman Show is a radicalized version of most of our every-day lives.

    4. Seahaven

Seahaven is the small, fake (or "set-up") city that Truman lives in. It reminds me of London because of the mass-surveillance.

Truman is the star in his own TV-show called “The Truman Show”, but he doesn’t know it himself. He is being filmed through his life from his birth to his escape from the show. At first he doesn’t know that he is the star in a show, but slowly he get convincing that he is shut in, in an artificial world of actors.

I think the movie tries to remind us about the watched world we live and that it is important to see situations from different perspectives to avoid manipulation.

I found the idea of this movie very nice. I think it was very well thought out, and quite an original idea. I also think that Jim Carrey played the role of Truman Burbanks very well.

2: What is the message of the film?

The message of this movie is that we all live in a world controlled by somebody else. The media has a lot of control of the world that we live in, and they show us what they want to show us. Of course everything isn’t set up, the way it is in the Truman Show (as far as I know, I could be the Truman of today), but the point still stands. The media are showing the world to us, and they present it they way they want to. It could also be a message that we have to remember that we are being watched all of the time in our western society.

3: Was watching this movie relevant in connection with what we are working on at the moment? Explain (please)

Yes it was, otherwise Thomas Grann wouldn’t have showed us the movie. It shows us how it is to live in a world, where you are being monitored all of the time. Some people claim that in the modern western world, we are going to be watched all of the time, and this movie shows us how it is being watched. It seems kind of creepy to be watched like Truman is.

4: What is Seahaven and does it remind you of something

Seahaven is a film studio created, that has to seem perfect. Everything is as it “should” be. Everybody is happy all of the time. It kind of reminds me of London, because London has a lot of cameras all over city. It also reminds me of the modern world in which we live. We are being watched all of the time.

  5. 1: I am quite fond of the movie. It may seem a little silly every now and then, but the movie has a greater meaning. It’s a movie that is relevant to the world we live in today, and it can be watched by everybody. Overall it's a great pretty good movie.

2: The message of the film, is that we are born into an environment that is controlled by the media and those in power. We are being watched all the time, and the media manipulates the real world into a fake paradise. Truman has to leave his comfort zone and leave the safety behind. So do we. If we want to live life the way it is, we have to leave safety and the media culture behind. Only then can we experience the world the way it really is.

3: Yes, because Truman lives in a fake media landscape. He is being watched all the time, and so are we. All over the world we can find cameras. They are everywhere. Truman’s world is based on surveillance and surveillance is our current main topic.

4: In a way, the world Truman lives in, is also the world we live in. Yes, the movie is just like Big Brother and it could also be seen as London, but I think it reflects our world. Seahaven is a landscape that is being manipulated into seeming perfect by the media and the authorities. It’s full of safety and no worries. That’s what the authorities want our world to be like.

The movie was about a man, there was surveilled his whole life. In the movie there happing that Truman slowly discoverer that he is being surveilled.
I very much like the movie, because I think that if this ever was a series about a man there don’t that he has cameras in his face. It we be something like this, but maybe he will have discover it before he did.

    2.
The message of the movie is to make people think about that we all live in a surveilled world.

    3.
It was relevant because the movie was about a man there was being watched by millions, and we are learning about surveillance in class.

    4.
Yes, it reminds me of when we had about simulacrum, because Seahaven is a fake of some city there never has been.

The Truman Show is about a man, who is living his normal life, without knowing that he is on a set being watched by millions of people 24-7. He lives this perfect life, with a perfect wife, and job, but he feels like he is missing something in his life.
He has a dream of exploring the world, and without knowing that a huge amount of people are watching him, he tries to reach his dream. The movie is in my opinion good and very moving too, especially the end, where Truman tries to escape the perfect life and Christof tries to stop him, but he still manages to escape.

2: What is the message of the film?

The movie is in my opinion, a way to show people how much the media can manipulate people. You see how easy it is for people to literally put a man in a world, created by a producer and then follow him around 24-7 in order to amuse viewers.

3: Was watching this movie relevant in connection with what we are working on at the moment? Explain (please)
Yes, i had very much to do with what we are working on at the moment. At the moment we are working with the subject "surveillance" and the movie "The Truman Show" has a lot to do with surveillance. The main character in the show is being watched, his every move is being taped and people are able to watch this for their amusement. He is being watched.

4: What is Seahaven and does it remind you of something?
Seahaven is the name of the "city" that Cristof (the producer of the Truman Show) has created in corporation with the hole idea of "the truman show".
"The Truman Show" reminds me of the text/book that we have read about keeping 1984 in the past. In the text/book we know that the society was under big surveillance, and this is also seen in the movie, because the movie presents strong surveillance.

I think that it is a good and a well thought out movie with an excellent cast. With Jim Carrey in it, makes it all funnier, and it is hard to feel sad when it is sad, because with Jim Carrey it seems like a joke and just fun. I personally like these kind of movie drama/comedy, and the actor is so funny which I really like. It is the first time ever I’ve seen a movie which follows a person 24/7 in a TV show.

2: What is the message of the film?
The message of the movie is probably to remind us of that we are being watched all the time. The media has a lot of power in the world, they can manipulate a lot of people, like they show us anything and we just believe in it.

3: Was watching this movie relevant in connection with what we are working on at the moment? Explain (please)
Yes, I think it is relevant, because what we are working with right now is surveillance, and in the movie we see what it is really like to be watched 24/7 with over 5000 cameras, and it is also what we are going through, we are also being watched all the time, just not like Truman.

4: What is Seahaven and does it remind you of something?
It reminds me of the book 1984 written by George Orwell, where an ordinary man was being watched all the time, what he was saying, doing everything except when he was in the restrooms.
It also reminds me of London with all cameras and surveillance.

  9. 1: Write a brief review of the movie. Feel free to comment on elements that you liked or disliked, important scenes and things you found interesting

I find the movie both funny, moving and thought provoking. The idea of a corporation adopting a child from an unwanted pregnancy is absolutely absurd, but when you think about it, the media and the entire world is constantly pushing boundaries and exploring new ways to entertain the masses and sustain their interest. One of the most popular ways of making television is reality TV and Truman Burbank is the ultimate reality TV star.
I think some of the best scenes in the movie are the reactions you get from the people watching the Truman show, for example the two security guards who watch television while they are at work and the two elder ladies who have pillows with Truman’s face on it.

2: What is the message of the film?

I think that the message of the movie is that you have to be critical of everything you see, especially in the media landscape. The “reality” we experience through the media and the way they depict reality and the world, is a lot like Truman’s world, everything is fake and manipulated and a lot of people just believe it and accept that, that is the reality.

3: Was watching this movie relevant in connection with what we are working on at the moment? Explain (please)

Yes it was. The movie tells us to stop and think for a second before we just accept what the media tells us to think and believe. The movie criticizes the way the media controls everything we believe is happening in the world and the way people just believe everything they see on television.

4: What is Seahaven and does it remind you of something?

It is a fake place without worries and with complete security. But it is also a place, which is very watched, and it is not what it appears to be. It reminds me of London or perhaps Denmark, a place which seems to be very well functioning and where people are happy, but it is also the most watched places in the world. It also reminds me of the way the media controls everything we see and hear about the world. If we don’t look upon what the media tells us, with critical eyes we are going to believe everything they say and get the wrong idea of what the world is like, we are going to fear what is outside of our little world and home, and live the rest of our lives fearing the world and the unknown.

“The Truman Show” is an extreme picture of how the increasingly use of surveillance in public spaces can turn in to in the future.

  11. 1. I personally think that ’’The Truman Show’’, is a very good movie, because it starts of by being a comedy. At first, I thought this movie would be very boring, but the fact that it becomes more and more interesting, makes the movie seem a lot more touching. Just to think about the fact that Truman has lived his life without knowing that he has actually been watched the whole time by the whole world, is kind of making me irritated, because it means that he has had no privacy at all without knowing.
    2. I think that the message in this movie is to show the role that the media has in our world.
    3. This movie is very relevant with the Theme that we are working with now, because it gives the audience an impression of how it is to live in a society being under surveillance.
    4. Seaheaven is the name of the ‘’city’’ that Truman lives in. In general it reminds me of the societies taking place in the several countries that is under surveillance.

    - I think the first scene where Sylvia tries to tell Truemann, in the Truemann show, that his world is fake. I like the movie, it makes you think, and it reminds me of “The Matrix”. You get paranoid, when you see people living in a fake world, and like sims, you have a master who moves you around. The last scene, or the last part, from the boat and till the end, that’s important too. He crashes into the wall, and finds out that his life has been one big lie, and he gets into the real world.
    2. What is the message of the film?
    - That you have to go your own way, and you shouldn’t take everything for grandet. You need to fight for yourself and your dreams. You should not blindly trust people around you.
    3. Was watching the movie relevant in connection with what we are working on at the moment? Explain (please).
    - Somehow yes, but I do not think that this is surveillance. The movie shows what cameras can do, and how much you actually can capture with cameras, but this is a TV show, not surveillance. You can relate in the methods they film the Truemann show, but not directly to the word surveillance.
    4. What is Seahaven and does it remind you of something?
    - The Seahaven is a stage, where a TV show is rolling every week, every day and night. It is a fake world for Truemann, but still it is his home town.
Like I was talking about in question 1, it reminds me about sims and The Matrix, both have fake worlds, but only sims has a creator and a master, who moves around with the life’s in the game, like Christof moves Truemann around in his TV show.

  13. 1) Write a brief review of the movie. Feel free to comment on elements that you liked or disliked, important scenes and things you found interesting.

I think the movie is very good. I liked the twist in the movie, and seeing the main character slowly getting to know the truth. I found that, an important scene was the day when he acted normally but knew. The others did not know, that he knew, but he was being a bit more sarcastic and saying stuff like "I knew it", and after that disappeared, to later in another scene, being found on a boat sailing away.

    2) What is the message of the film?

The movie, shows us, that having a society with cameras everywhere, will make a fake living. People will not act normal when they know they are being watched, and therefore would not really be able to live a normal life. The movie also shows, that there is a line, to how much you can hold people under surveillance. That there should still be privacy, at least in their own home.

    3) Was watching this movie relevant in connection with what we are working on at the moment? Explain (please)

Yes the movie was relevant, because Seahaven is a place under constant surveillance. You could even see people, "removing" other people who were doing something wrong. (the father as a homeless man, the guy in a present when Truman was a child. )

    4) What is Seahaven and does it remind you of something?
Seahaven is a fake society made so that cameras could follow Truman's life, and correct it in whatever way they saw fit. It reminds me of London. All of the surveillance, not one place, where you can't be watched, and if you do something wrong, it will be found and corrected.
It also reminds me of TV-shows nowadays where there is constant surveillance, such as Paradise Hotel or Big Brother. Both the townspeople in Seahaven(except for Truman) and the people participating in the TV-shows know that there are cameras, and therefore act/behave according to what they think people want to see.

I think that it is a very crazy movie, and I think that it is so wrong that the instructor just take a little baby, and catch him in a studio, just to make a TV show, you could say that the instructor has caught him in a kind of prison, because Truman can’t come out of the show, he is catch I the studio, and the instructor is trying to make “the perfect world” for Truman.
    2:
I think that the message in the film is that, you need to go your own ways, and you are the only one who decides what your life will be.
It is also to remind people that you are being watch a lot of places, but you don’t know then.
    3:
Yes, I think that this movie, is relevant, to that topic we are working with right now, because it is about a person, named Truman, who live in a TV-show, and being watch, all the time, even when he sleep.
    4:
Seahaven is the town Truman is living in, its a perfect town, that why it is named Seahaven, because it sound like something very beautiful.
The town/world that Truman lives in, remind me of the movie “The matrix”, because the matrix is also about someone who live in a fantasy world, a better world than the real world. When I think about Seahaven it is also remind me of the game Sims, who is about creating a world, for the simmers, that you manage, and you decide what these simmers do.

I think that The Truman Show is an interesting movie, that brings a lot of thoughts to your head.
The fact, that you quickly realise how fake Truman's world is makes it even more interesting to watch him slowly find out, that his whole life is a lie, and you really sit there feeling sorry for him while you watch a whole world watching him without him realising it for many many years.
The movie makes you wonder what extreme suveillance would be like. It certainly made me think about, if I would want to have people looking at me all the time. I wouldn't like that total lack of privacy very much, so I was very happy with the ending of the movie.

2: What is the message of the film?
The message of the film is, that the world will become a fake and unrealistic, if we watch each other's every move. Noone can act the way they truly want to because they know that someone is watching somewhere. People will become paranoid, if they knew they were being watched, just like Truman begins testing the society around him, because he knows something is wrong.

3: Was watching this movie relevant in connection with what we are working on at the moment? Explain (please)
The movie was relevant to our subject. It shows us an extreme form of surveillance. The society outside of Truman's world is an extreme picture of society today. We also like to watch other people do stupid and meaningless things, and we involve ourselves way too much. Luckily we haven't got to that point, where we control human lives in such way, that they aren't even aware of it. The thought of this happening is quite scary, and hopefully someone will stop the madness before that happens.

4: What is Seahaven and does it remind you of something?
Seahaven is the place, where Truman lives. It is a fake world - an illusion made for its one true inhabitant - Truman. Truman is not aware that his world is not real, as it is expertly made to make him stay in this state of mind.
I guess you can compare Seahaven to The Matrix, as both worlds are all about keeping the illusion for the greater good. Both worlds are a fake created for the profit of those controlling it, and the people in it are trapped in the illusion of a perfectly normal world and kept from realising the truth.
Seahaven also reminds me of reality television nowadays. People are constantly being watched, because other people find it entertaining and pay for it. The more we see, the more the company earns, and the more people expose themselves, the more we laugh.

The movie is about a guy, called Truman, he has been watched by people his whole life. Everybody around him is actors in the Truman show. Truman is the main character in the show and everything is setup, even the people around him, his marriage is not even real, and his “best friend” is just acting.
I like the movie, it was a hilarious movie. The funny thing about the movie was the actor’s behavior. The part that I disliked was the whole setup, which he thought was real, but he was the only one acting real. The whole movie is a simulacrum.

2: What is the message of the film?
I think the massage of the movie is that everybody has been watched, in some way and you cannot trust everybody in this world.

3: Was watching this movie relevant in connection with what we are working on at the moment? Explain (please)
Yes, I think it was relevant, because it is uncomfortable to be watched in a store or just in Public building, you do not act like you usually act, but in this case Truman did not know about the whole show. He felt very disappointed, when he found out, that his whole life was a lie.

4: What is Seahaven and does it remind you of something?
It reminds me of the documentary that we watched. We watched a documentary about the surveillance in Great Britain, there was more than 100 CCTV’s on Shetland Islands, that means 1 camera per 14 citizens and there were 5000 cameras watching one person, Truman.

The Truman Show is about a man with the name Truman Burbank being watched by the world as entertainment. The cast includes Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich, Ed Harris and Natascha McElhone.
The concept is unique which I like about it. I haven’t seen many movies with this concept.
The ending is a little disappointing. I don’t like that it’s ends with just people cheering for him. The ending builds new question like “what’s going to happen with Truman?” or “Will he find Sylvia?”
Also I think that the role of Sylvia is unnecessary. Nothing really happens with her in the end and that she is the reason why he wants to leave, and yet she still gets little screen time is something unnecessary. He could have had an entire different reason for leaving, but the most upsetting is of course that he doesn’t get to Fuji and meet her. It shows us that she is the reason but then doesn’t really do more.
Overall I like the movie because of the concept being unique, not because of the acting or anything. The acting for wasn’t something special, it didn’t blow me away, it was a normal experience.
    2.
The fact the Truman wants to break out of his “cell” shows that no matter what humans striving for freedom.
But that people wants to watch a person’s life in an artificial world, shows that human also strive for entertainment and when we’re running out of entertainment that can amuse us, we will hold one of ourselves captive just for our amusement. Maybe even play god, like the director talking to Truman when he was about to leave.
    3.
Surely the movie is about surveillance at some parts. The movie is about a show, which means that it’s only one person that’s being watched and it’s for entertainment reasons, it doesn’t have anything to do with criminals and is not for protection.
    4.
Many reality shows is like that, whether the reality-shows are real or nor remains unanswered. The difference between the reality-show and the movie is that in reality-shows people volunteer to be watched, while in the movie Truman doesn’t know that he’s being watched.
The novel Big Brother is at some parts like the movie. Except that in the movie it’s a show and not the government but if the shows was about an entire population of people then it could become like the novel.
