Shrek - A postmodern movie?

It has been argued that in postmodern times it is no longer possible to do anything original. The postmodern artist is only able to steal or borrow from previous works of art. Did you notice any examples of that in Shrek?

Apart from that, a dominant feature of postmodernism is irony and a feeling of discomfort in the presence of big emotions. This often causes people to make fun of everything, including themselves, to hide their discomfort. Did you notice any examples of that in Shrek?

Finally, many people are uncertain of their own identity and keep asking questions about who they really are.Did you notice any examples of that in Shrek?

  3. 1. In the movie "Shrek" we see many characters borrowed from other works of arts. All the classic fairy tale prissences is involved. Fiona - one of the main characters is created among other things by the original story about "Sleeping Beaty" where she has to be kissed by her one true love before she awakes. In Shrek, Fiona just have to be kissed to transform into her "true form".

    2. I noticed a scene in Shrek where Fiona sings, and suddenly a bird sings along - like in the fairy tale "Cindarella". Its very beatiful and then the bird explodes.
Another example of the creaters making fun of their own work, is when Shrek is about to interrupt the wedding. Donkey tells Shrek to wait for the right moment in order to make the act more romantic.

    3. Shrek is uncertain of his own identity. He keep telling himself that he is a ugly ogre, because everyone is afraid of him. But both Fiona and donkey proves him wrong on that point, and they actually end up loving him. He may be ugly on the surface but he is a real gentleman on the inside.

  5. Christoffer:

    1) There appear many characters from other fairy tales. The Three Little Pigs, Robin Hood, The Seven Dwarfs. Additionally, using the above situations from other fairy tales. Shrek must find a princess who is in a high tower and kiss her. Like Sleeping Beauty.

The whole Shrek story is probably based on the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. Where the monster in this case Shrek falls in love with beauty Fionia

    2) Irony also plays a major role in the fairy tale . Although Shrek is shot with an arrow, the situation is still made sense.
In the situation before they are attacked by Robin Hood and his minions, but it is surprising Fiona defending Shrek and Donkey. In the episode, there use slow motion to give it a humorous touch.

3)Where it is evident to see that a grade is it hard to fall, is Princes Fionia who can not figure out whether she should be human or ogre

  6. Shrek's and the donkey's journey/travel is a typical reproduction from the well-known fantasy-stories/fairy tales stories

  7. In the beginning of the movie shrek is reading a ordinary fairy tale, about this princess who is locked in a tower etc. in the bathroom. After ending the story he says:"Like that ever happens" and starts laughing. This is typical postmodernism because it is an old story, and Shrek makes a joke out of it.

Lord Farquaard is king og Dunlock. But he does not look like a ordinary king. He is not very tall and that is mentioned a few times through the entire movie. It is characteristic for postmodernism to make irony and it is very ironic that the king is a small person. Besides that, he is blackmailing a cookie in the beginning of the movie. Who does that?

  8. Shrek is a postmodern animated film. This is for instance expressed through out the massive inspiration of other works of art. The book, which is both in the very beginning and the end of the movie, is an inspiration of the classic Disney fairy tales. There are plenty of fairy tale characters along with Shrek and donkey, including snow white, fairy godmothers from the Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood and Pinocchio. Princess Fiona is kept in a tower guarded by a dragon this as well comes from the Sleeping Beauty. They do also mention Shrek and Fiona as being the Beauty and the Beast during the film.

To avoid the deeper emotions the movie is being deeply ironic. For instance when the donkey disturbs Shrek and Fiona’s romantic moment in the woods. When Fiona is trying to explain how she is cursed, Donkey says: “I didn’t know you wrote poetry!” When Farquaad is proposing and grasping her hand, the solemn moment is spoiled by his height as well. As the dragon is expressing its love towards the Donkey he says that he is an asthmatic and therefor ruining the moment.

Last but not least, Shrek is awfully insecure about himself during the movie. He talks of orgs being like onions with layers, while Donkey talks of him being a cake. It is obviously very difficult for everyone to understand the identity of Shrek. He is unsure of himself and afraid of his own feelings, he is expressing his insecurity by pushing everyone away. He judges himself and he is sure that he is not nearly good enough or handsome enough to deserve Fiona.

  9. A lot of fragments from older fairytales are used in Shrek. Which shows this way of “stealing” from previous works of art in postmodernism.

Almost every fairytale character is represented in the movie. Especially seen in the swamp. These old fairytale characters have their own marks, which we remember them of. An example is seen in the ironic way the 7 dwarfs almost throws the chest with snow-white on Shrek’s dining table.

The magic Mirror from Snow White is used as King Farquaad’s datingprofile or some kind of commercial that presents all the princesses, which clearly gives an ironic twist.

An example of using a fragment from the old fairytales is also when Shrek scares the townsmen. They become paralysed with fear and he has to say “This is the part where you run away”, which makes fun of the old genre. The same way of reffering to a fairytale kliché is when Shrek says that the princess has to be in the highest tower, because “I read that in a book once”.

Poor irony is used a lot and an example is a short passage where the donkey wants to stay in the swamp and Shrek says “of course” donkey: “really” shrek:”NO!”

Shrek is very insecure, he does not think much of himself and tries to frighten people because that is the easiest way out. But underneath this scary appearance he is a very emotional soul, which shows that he is uncertain of his own identity.

  10. In the postmodern movie, Shrek, there has been stolen many sections from previous movies. First of all, the main focus in the movie is fairy tails. In connection with this, the plot of the movie is based on combined parts from older fairy tails. The main relation is to "the sleeping beauty", in which a princess has been locked in a tower, where she waits for a prince, or just her love to rescue her. Throughout the movie we meet a number of characters that has been taken directly from other fairy tails. We also meet situations that have also appeared in other stories.

In postmodern movies it is often seen that there has been taken a certain distance to emotions. Deeper emotions are often expressed in a discomfort way, and in relation with that, there has often been made a joke in connection with big emotions. This is a way of creating distance and hiding their discomfort. This is especially in combination with Shrek. He has a lot of doubt of himself and is actually a bit sorry about himself being an ogre. In connection with this serious problem, there has been made a lot of jokes. As an example he is described as an onion, which is done in a very funny way even though it is actually not a very good characteristic. There has also been used a lot of irony in the movie, which is also a distinct feature from postmodernism. This is also to make certain things appear funny. Fiona is a beautiful princess, but suddenly she belches very high and even beats up some guys, which can actually be a way of using foreshadowing. We get a sense of her real identity.

Furthermore is identity an important topic in postmodern literature. Throughout the movie the purpose for the characters is to find their real identity and to find a way of being satisfied with their life. Innumerable times the characters look at their own reflections with displeasure, which is a symbol of their dissatisfaction about their own identity.

  11. 1. The artist has steeled or borrowed from previous works of art some of the examples are:
Shrek's morning routine where he takes a shower etc. (American Psycho).
The dwarves from Snow white, Pinocchio, the wolf and the three little pigs, the muffin man and many other roles from different fairytales. They all assembled in the beginning in front of Shrek’s house.
He travels all the way to find the princes (Sleeping Beauty).

    2. Irony of previous works of art.
An example of irony is when he arrives at the castle and finds the princes. She expects that he kisses her, but he shakes her instead and laughs when she thinks he is her prince (knight).
Another irony occurs when the princes beats Robin Hood and his men in the woods (matrix-slow-motion).
The artist makes fun of TV-shows where it comes out that one have find a girl to marry (The Lord need to choose the present princess’s by using the mirror)
Making balloons of snake and a frog and at last the artist makes fun with marriage.
The bird that explodes when singing together with the princes.

    3. Identity
When Shrek is eating the onion and walks with the donkey, he can’t define himself.

  12. 1. Question:
First of all there is the plot witch has been seen before. A hero who saves a princess locked op in a tower is for example a reference to the well-known story - The Sleeping Beauty. Furthermore there are all sorts of well-known characters from old fairytales, like Robin Hood, Snow white, in the movie.

    2. Question
A good example of the discomfort of big emotions is the scene in witch Shrek almost kisses Fiona, but suddenly is interrupted by donkey, which putting them into an awkward situation rather than a beautiful moment of true love (with big emotions). Irony is used a lot I Shrek, for example when Donkey falls in love with the big (scary) dragon.

    3. Question
When Shrek hears Fiona and Donkey talk, and misunderstand the situation, and gets very uncertain on himself. He might have thought that he had a chance with Fiona, but now he gets so uncertain and angry. He thinks he is to bad looking and to different to get her.
Of course Fiona´s transformation between ogre and human princess causes a lot of uncertainty fore Fiona on her own identity.

  13. Shrek: Examples of Postmodernism;
    - At the beginning of the movie, Shrek is reading in a book, some kind of fairytale book, like in almost all World Disney movies.
    - There is used a lot of characters from other movies, a lot of them is from disney or from other fairytales; Snow-white and The Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, the three little pigs, Red Riding Hood, sleeping beauty (the curse is lifted with a kiss from her true love), mirror on the wall (snow-white).
    - The mirror on the wall makes use of a dating-program like in the television. He uses the characters Cinderella, snow-white and Princess Fiona).
    - Battle between the men who is going to rescue Fiona. Shrek is the winner. This could be a reference to the gladiators from the old Greece.
    - Sword in the stone pulled up from the stone by a real hero (Shrek)
    - Robin Hood and his men - Fiona has a battle with them (like Karate Kid or Matrix)
    - A spell: "By night one way. By day another. This shall be the norm. Until you find true love's first kiss. And then take love's true form"
    - The banner looks a bit like the Facebook logo

    Examples of Irony:
    - ”Hey now you’re a rockstar” - This is a song played in the movie - this is irony, because Shrek is the opposite of a rockstar
    - The mirror on the wall makes use of a dating-program like in the television
    - The princess (princess Fiona) who has a beautiful voice and who is friend to all the animals in the forest (like Cinderella), but then voice turns ugly and kills the little bird - she takes the eggs from the bird and eats them for breakfast.
    - It is atypical with a princess who makes burps

    Idensity:
    - Shrek loves Fiona, and Fiona loves Shrek, but they cannot tell each other, because they are afraid of being hurt.
    - "Who could ever love a ogre?" - she is talking about herself, but he thinks she is talking about him...

    Foreshadowing:
An example of foreshadowing would be when the mirror tries to mention something about Princes Fiona but Lord F. ignores it. Something might be wrong with Fiona – she is an ogre. She is also afraid of the sun going down in the evening, and that is also a foreshadowing

    Epiphany:
    - Someone can actually love her although she is an ogre. The spell says something about; "Until you find true love's first kiss. And then take love's true form" - she is taking the true love's form as an ogre, because she loves Shrek.

Examples from the movie could be, when Shrek found the princess in the tower it´s stolen from “ the sleeping beauty”
And other examples are when Shrek sit on his table and the dwarves comes with snow-white. And when he go outside we can see recognized other fairytale, like “Numskull Jack and other.

Apart from that, a dominant feature of postmodernism is irony and a feeling of discomfort in the presence of big emotions. This often causes people to make fun of everything, including themselves, to hide their discomfort. Did you notice any examples of that in Shrek?
Irony in this movie is everywhere, when Shrek and when Donkey talks. Donkey make fun with everything, he told Shrek that he is ugly and nobody didn´t like him., and Shrek do that also. Examples could be when “Fiona” tells Donkey he should found a special Flower, donkey try to find it, but he said to himself I am color-blind, and we can see he make fun with himself.

Finally, many people are uncertain of their own identity and keep asking questions about who they really are.Did you notice any examples of that in Shrek?
When Shrek and donkey talks together, Shrek said, he didn´t know who is really am.
When Fiona be a ogre, she didn´t know who she is and which identity she really has.

    - The three little pigs is hiding in the toilet house. ( This scene is before the movie has started.) It is borrowed from the movie where the three little pigs hides from the big wolf.
    - The beginning: is a fairytale - then princess is locked into a tower like the fairytale about “gylden lok”
They borrow every fairytale creatures from Disney - this is shown when they are searching got fairytale creatures.
(Pinocchio , nisser, de tre små grise osv.)

    - The mirror on the wall ” " mirror mirror on the wall..” Is taken from Snow white

Apart from that, a dominant feature of postmodernism is irony and a feeling of discomfort in the presence of big emotions. This often causes people to make fun of everything, including themselves, to hide their discomfort. Did you notice any examples of that in Shrek?
    - The princess thinks that shrek is her True love, and they laugh ( donkey and shrek) - because they can’t relate to love.
    - The donkey - is color blind and he is sent out to find red flowers with thorns (irony)

Finally, many people are uncertain of their own identity and keep asking questions about who they really are.Did you notice any examples of that in Shrek?
    - Princess Fiona constantly changes from beauty to ugly during sunset.
    - The Prince isn’t tall but sees himself as a tall and important person.
    - Princess Fiona uses poetry after Shrek rescued her - this is borrowed from Romeo and Juliet.

  16. There are many examples of which the movie steal things and epecially characters from other works of art fx the three little pigs, snowwhite, the fairy godmothers, the sword in the stone. The movie also deals with a big identity problem, because Shrek doesn't completely know who he is, and he constantly makes jokes about it. The people around him calls him an orger but he thinks there is more to him. He uses the onion theory, to explain this.
The movie also uses a lot of irony epecially when it comes to Shrek and his feelings. Every time this happens in the movie there is always a joke seconds later fx when Shrek and the donkey make up, the donkey says something about how uncomfortable he feels about all this feelings being revealed.
